Unirazak Students Contribute To GPM’s Pakistan Fund

Muslim Student Association of  Tun Abdul Razak University (UNIRAZAK) or PERMAI  assisted Global Peace Mission (GPM) in fund-raising campaign to support continuous aid to Pakistan.

The campaign which was held for two weeks (23/9 – 8/10) at the university received tremendous response from students, staff and faculty members. In addition, an exhibition on GPM’s humanitarian effort was held in the university area aimed at cultivating the spirit of volunteerism among the students.

A total of RM 4,015 (about USD 1,300) was raised. Mr. Azri Jilani, Head of Student Affairs Department at UNIRAZAK handed over the donation to GPM Manager of Relief Operations, Mr. Muhammad Suhail Ahmad, at a ceremony held on 12 October 2010 at UNIRAZAK.

The fund raised exceeded the target of RM3, 500.00 and it indicates the solidarity of UNIRAZAK community with the flood victims of Pakistan. They realized that the Pakistani people really need continuous assistance in order to restore their normal lives.

Also present was Mr. Mohd Shazni Abdullah, who was a member of GPM’s first humanitarian aid mission to Pakistan from 6 to 16 September 2010. The mission brought about RM 37,000 (USD 12,000) in food and medical aid to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the vicinity Hyderabad. Sharing his experience during the 10-day mission, he thanked the university community for their care and concern about the plight of a nation in distress.  He also appealed to the audience to keep on supporting this noble cause to lessen the burden of the victims.

Through the fund raising effort, students in the university realized the importance of social work to help fellow human beings aside from pursuing excellence in their academic work.

GPM welcomes contributions from the public in aid of flood victims in Pakistan. Our plan next is to embark on livelihood programs such as livestock rearing and microfinance in a few affected communities. We also welcome Qurban participation in Pakistan where one portion costs RM 250 (USD 80).

Experts estimates that Pakistan needs about 5 years to return to normalcy.
